The Lost War Had a Limited but Decisive Nature, Says Gevorgyan
Leader of the "Armenia" parliamentary faction, Armen Gevorgyan, has written on his Telegram channel: "In recent times, events around our country have become increasingly uncertain and thus alarming. Many might ask, what could be worse than the 44-day war? Of course, the lost war had a limited but decisive nature. It marked the beginning of a more profound geopolitical reconfiguration in the region.
This process involves the aspirations of the quartet—Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the West (read: the United States and the EU)—that must be satisfied. It is important to clearly understand that a new configuration of the geopolitical map of the South Caucasus will form at the expense of only three states: Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan, which will satisfy all parties involved.
Such decisions are born from heavy and painful considerations, but they are usually formed for a much longer historical perspective—50, 100 years, or more, while local wars and conflicts determine arrangements for a shorter period. In this difficult process, it is essential to show pragmatism, wisdom, and the ability to avoid losing friends while finding new allies to advance our national interests.
But the main thing is to make our own people our primary ally or companion, to reach a public consensus. There cannot be peace with neighbors if there is no peace within our own country.
Processes are unfolding around us rapidly—we do not have the time to reorganize, recover, or pause. They will not allow us that. But on the other hand, it is not true that major players are interested in our defeat or will act against our interests. In this context, what should be our course of action, our resource for strengthening?
- Overcome the psychology of the defeated. Actively work with allies, neighbors, and major players to move past the mental state of loss.
- Be ready for public consensus within. Be prepared to revise the internal agenda and re-evaluate many approaches within the country.
- Sharply strengthen the Armenian world factor. It is a serious, significant aspect if one works intelligently, utilizing all resources and connections."
