Biden Agrees to Execute U.S. Troop Withdrawal Plans
U.S. President Joe Biden has agreed to a Pentagon directive that outlines the end of the military operation for evacuation from Afghanistan and the withdrawal of American troops by August 31. This was reported on Tuesday by Reuters, citing sources within the U.S. administration.
According to the source, the relevant directive was submitted by the U.S. Department of Defense on Monday, based on concerns for the safety of American military personnel. As noted by Reuters’ source, Biden has also asked the Pentagon to develop an action plan in case it becomes necessary to keep U.S. forces in Kabul for a longer period.
According to the agency, Washington simultaneously informs the radical Taliban movement that the withdrawal of American forces by August 31 is contingent upon the level of cooperation from the Taliban regarding assistance with the evacuation.
The U.S. Armed Forces have been deployed to Kabul airport to ensure the evacuation of Americans and Afghan refugees from Afghanistan. Officials from the Washington administration have repeatedly stated their intention to meet the established deadline.
