Azerbaijanis Specially Altered the Course of the Zvaraget River, No Longer Connecting to the Meghri River, Says Tatoyan
The right to water is a fundamental human right recognized by the UN, especially for this century. This was stated by the Ombudsman of Armenia, Arman Tatoyan, during a press conference today.
Tatoyan, speaking about the Zvaraget river tributary of the Meghri river, announced that Azerbaijanis have altered the course of the Zvaraget tributary for more than five years, and it no longer merges with the Meghri river. Historically, this tributary has always joined the main Meghri river in August.
Azerbaijanis have intentionally changed the course, leading to serious water issues starting in August. This particularly affects the cities of Meghri and Agarak, as well as the villages of Nrnadzor, Alvank, and Shvanidzor. This area is home to 90 percent of the population of the enlarged Meghri community.
Another water accessibility issue relates to Lake Sevan, which has been encroached upon by Azerbaijanis. According to Tatoyan, this issue needs to be raised on international platforms.
There are also water-related problems in the Gegharkunik region, where there are water basins currently under the control of Azerbaijani armed forces. Residents indicate that drinking water for neighboring villages is sourced from there.
