Pashinyan Sends Letter to Biden
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on his Facebook page that he has sent a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden. The letter reads as follows:
“Your Excellency, the people of Armenia and the global Armenian community received your message officially recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire between 1915-1923 with great enthusiasm. I highly appreciate your principled stance, which is a powerful step towards truth and historical justice, as well as invaluable support for the heirs of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.
I would also like to specifically mention the joint resolutions of both chambers of the U.S. Congress recognizing the Armenian Genocide in 2019 and note that your message has achieved its goal in the United States, advancing the process of recognition.
Recognition of the Armenian Genocide is important not only to pay tribute to the 1.5 million innocent victims but also to prevent the recurrence of such crimes.
For the Republic of Armenia, recognition is a matter of both truth and historical justice, as well as security, especially in light of last year's events in our region.
I fully share your view: “If we do not fully recognize, commemorate and teach our children about the genocide, then the words ‘Never Again’ lose their meaning.”
Dear Mr. Biden, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the United States is a necessary message to the international community reaffirming the priority of human rights and values in international relations. In this regard, it is an encouraging and inspiring example for all those who wish to jointly build a just and tolerant international society.
Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest respect.”
It should be noted that U.S. President Joe Biden officially recognized the Armenian Genocide for the first time among U.S. presidents in a message addressed to the Armenian people on April 24.
