Macron Addresses Navalny's Imprisonment in Russian
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has responded to the decision to replace the conditional sentence of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny with actual imprisonment by making a Twitter post in Russian. Macron's statement was highlighted by Reporter.
The French leader condemned the actions of Russian authorities and called for Navalny's release. "Alexei Navalny's sentence is unacceptable. Political disagreements can never be considered a crime. We call for his immediate release," Macron wrote on social media in Russian.
It is worth noting that representatives from the United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, the United States, and Germany have also made similar calls.
Navalny was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison by a Moscow court, which ruled that his conditional sentence related to the thefts at 'Ivy Roche' would be replaced with actual imprisonment. Navalny will serve 2 years and 8 months in a standard regime penal colony.
