France to Impose Third National Lockdown Due to Coronavirus
France's chief medical advisor indicated on Sunday that the country may soon need to implement a third national lockdown to combat the coronavirus, as reported by the BBC.
Professor Jean-François Delfraissy, head of the scientific council that advises the government on the pandemic, stated that the situation is critical and emphasized that this week is highly important. He urged the government to take swift action regarding the spread of the new strain of the virus.
According to the professor, the infection rate of the new 'British' variant has reached between 7% and 9% in certain regions of France, making it challenging to contain its spread. He also warned that if regulations are not tightened, the French population could find themselves in an extremely difficult situation by mid-March.
A French government meeting is expected to take place on Wednesday to discuss the necessity of further measures. In the last seven days, the average infection rate has exceeded 20,000 cases, while the death toll has surpassed 73,000.
Under new regulations, travelers arriving by air from other EU member states are required to present a negative Covid-19 test result, although this requirement does not apply to those entering the country by land.
