The Armenian 'Sunken Fortress' of Archesh Emerges Due to Decline in Lake Van Water Level

The decline in the water level of Lake Van has revealed a historic Armenian fortress. This was reported by Ermenihaber. Old Archesh, part of which is today called 'Çelebibag', was gradually abandoned and submerged due to rising water levels in Lake Van in 1841. Subsequently, drought led to a decrease in water levels, and the 'sunken city' resurfaced.

Buildings belonging to the city had been significantly damaged in the 2011 earthquake in Van. According to the Turkish newspaper ‘Yeni Şafak,’ the lake's level has declined by 2 meters again due to drought, resulting in the visibility of the ruins of Archesh fortress.

Turkish researcher and writer Selahattin Kosar stated in an interview that part of the fortress should be restored and converted into a tourist center. It is noted that the Armenian fortress of Archesh was built during the times of the Kingdom of Van. In Turkey, discussions continue about the internal structures of the Old Archesh fortress and the historical mosque, while the existence of the church is not addressed at all.
