Pompeo States that the U.S. Will Attempt to Block Lifting of Arms Embargo on Iran

The United States intends to obstruct the lifting of the arms embargo on Iran, which is set to expire in October, announced U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as reported by TASS.

“At this time, we are fighting at the UN,” he said. The previous U.S. administration claimed that in five years, Iranians would be able to acquire weapons from China and Russia and sell arms. Without U.S. intervention, this could happen on October 18. We do not intend to let that happen,” he added.

According to the U.S. Secretary of State, the Gulf States support the U.S. stance. Additionally, he noted that “other countries privately inform the U.S. that they are on the right track.”

“Russia and China have chosen a different path,” he declared, “and they want to arm Iran, which threatens countries in the Middle East and Europe.”

At the beginning of August, the U.S., again accusing Iran regarding the nuclear deal, announced its intention to restore UN sanctions against Tehran. On August 20, Pompeo personally submitted the relevant request to the UN Security Council president. Earlier, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the U.S. initiative is illegal and “will inevitably fail.”
