Tikhanovskaya Announces Her Task is to Gather a Team for New Elections in Belarus
The former opposition candidate for the presidency of Belarus, Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya, has stated that her goal is to organize new and fair elections in the country, according to tass.ru. Tikhanovskaya announced her intention to gather a team to prepare for new presidential elections.
"My task is to unite that team, to organize and guide it in the right direction, namely, to prepare for new, honest, and transparent elections," Tikhanovskaya said.
She also assured that her team is ready to engage with all international partners. "We are open to everyone. We are in contact with the leaders and representatives of all countries interested in this matter," the former candidate stated.
It is noteworthy that Tikhanovskaya is currently in Lithuania, having left Belarus following the presidential elections held on August 9. Protests in Minsk have not ceased for 15 consecutive days. Citizens of the country are expressing their discontent with the results of the presidential elections held on August 9, wherein the incumbent president was announced the winner with 80 percent of the votes.
In the initial days of the protests, thousands were arrested, hundreds were injured, and three protesters have reportedly died. Some sources indicate a total of five fatalities.
