Protests Continue in Madrid Against Monarchy
A protest has once again taken place in Madrid, the capital of Spain, against the country's monarchical system of governance. Approximately one hundred people participated in the demonstration. The protesters described the monarchy as corrupt and expressed their desire for a popular republic.
The protest received support from various Catalan separatist groups and political parties, which urged people to join the demonstrators through social media. Earlier protests against the monarchy occurred in early June.
Spain is a parliamentary monarchy, with the king serving as the head of state. Currently, an investigation is underway regarding former monarch Juan Carlos I, the father of King Felipe VI, who is suspected of corruption. In March of this year, Felipe VI renounced the inheritance from his father and also stripped Juan Carlos I of his annual pension. This decision was influenced by a corruption scandal involving his father.
It is believed that Juan Carlos I received millions of euros from a secret offshore foundation linked to Saudi Arabia. The official statement from the Spanish royal household indicated that this concerns the Lucum foundation. Additionally, the king has refused to inherit any assets, investments, or financial entities from his father whose origin may raise suspicion.
It is important to remember that Juan Carlos I abdicated the throne in 2014.
