Beef and Pork Production Volumes Decrease in Armenia: ‘Zhoghovurd’

In Armenia, the number of livestock has increased. If in 2017, the number of cattle was 655,800, it decreased to 590,600 in 2018, to 571,861 in 2019, and slightly increased to 579,256 in 2020.

According to experts, the rise in livestock numbers in the last three years is due to state support programs for livestock development, which provide farmers with credit for importing breeding animals. However, while the livestock population in 2020 increased compared to 2019, it still significantly decreased compared to 2018 and 2017.

On the other hand, the production volumes of beef, pork, and mutton have dropped. The newspaper ‘Zhoghovurd’ reports that from January to April this year, the volume of meat production in Armenia increased by 0.6%. The reports from the Statistical Committee of the Republic show that this slight growth is attributed to an increase in poultry meat production volumes (which saw a 14.6% increase). Conversely, the production volumes of beef and pork declined by 5.1%, while mutton production dropped by 4.6%. This indicates that even state support programs have not had a positive effect on the volumes of meat production.
