We Cannot Boast About the Achievements of the Judicial System: Nikol Pashinyan

There have not been significant changes in the judicial system of Armenia since the velvet, non-violent revolution of 2018. This was stated by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during his speech at a discussion titled "Sustainable Cooperation Under New Signs: Armenia-Germany Relations" organized by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation from Berlin.

“There is one area where we cannot boast of great achievements in the past year and a half, and that is the judicial system, because the current judicial system, including the Constitutional Court, was formed under old political conditions. Since the 2018 revolution, there have not been significant changes in that regard. One reason for this is that we have been and continue to be guided by the path of making institutional steps in the Republic of Armenia, so that our actions are not spontaneous or inertial, and we can be sure that our actions will bring benefits rather than harm. Unfortunately, our country has long lived under conditions of a government-controlled judicial system, and the issue is not to establish control over the judicial system, but to create guarantees that there is truly an independent and impartial judicial system in the country that is not under the influence of the government or any other external or internal forces,” emphasized Pashinyan.

He noted that it is very important to start implementing judicial reforms now, including the strategy for judicial reforms that has been adopted with the support of the European Union, as well as the anti-corruption strategy.
