Surgeons Remove 1.2 kg Tumor from Newborn in Yerevan
On January 2, at the "Margaryan" maternity hospital, a newborn baby weighing 3.5 kg was found to have a 1.2 kg tumor in the pelvic area. The tumor was twice the size of the baby's head. The baby, delivered by cesarean section, was transferred to the "Holy Mother of God" medical center, where doctors began examining her.
The month-old girl was fortunate that doctors diagnosed the enormous tumor, known as a teratoma, later than usual; otherwise, she would not have survived birth at all.
The medical center's director and surgeon, Nikolay Dallakyan, informed reporters that he had never encountered a tumor of such size in newborns during his practice. However, after conducting necessary examinations, the doctors decided to operate and remove it.
Dallakyan explained that if the tumor had been detected earlier in the fetus, it would have been removed. Fortunately, the mother was able to undergo an ultrasound examination, which provided the opportunity to foresee the tumor and deliver the baby via cesarean section.
"The baby has already been discharged and has managed to regain weight during this time, as I mentioned, the 1.2 kg tumor constituted all of her weight beyond the normal 3.5 kg. The newborn is currently performing all necessary actions, moving her legs, and has no pelvic complications," said the doctor who saved the infant's life.
