Driver Who Fatally Struck Citizen Five Years Ago Identified
The incident occurred five years ago. On September 21, 2015, the police received a report from a medical center about a 76-year-old man who had been transported there with fractures and lacerations. Officers went to the hospital. However, the victim concealed the real circumstances of the incident, claiming that he had sustained his injuries due to his own negligence after falling near a bus station on the Yerevan-Abovyan road.
The next day, a new report regarding the same individual was received at the police station, which contained different information: the man had died.
As a result of extensive investigative measures and combining the information obtained with the conclusions of the forensic examination, law enforcement authorities established that on September 21, at around 21:00, the victim had sustained his injuries as a result of being hit by a vehicle on the Yerevan-Abovyan road. A criminal case was initiated at the Abovyan investigative department. An operational-investigative group was created, and various actions were taken to identify the unknown driver and locate him and the vehicle involved.
On June 16, 2016, due to the unknown identity of the suspect, the pretrial body decided to suspend the proceedings of the criminal case.
Five years later, as a result of joint efforts by officers from the Aragatsotn regional police department and the Ashtarak division, information was received that a 50-year-old resident of Avan may have been involved in the incident with his Mitsubishi Shogun vehicle.
On January 11, the suspect was brought to the Ashtarak police department and confessed to the crime. Efforts are underway to clarify all circumstances surrounding the case. The investigation of the initiated criminal case is ongoing.
