New Copper Smelting Complex Construction in Alaverdi on Our Agenda: Deputy Prime Minister
Negotiations are ongoing with a Chinese company regarding the copper smelter in Alaverdi. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Tigran Avinyan, during a conversation with reporters today, November 20.
In response to a question regarding the recent news that the smelter has been handed over to the son-in-law of Norik Petrosyan, who operates the Teghut mine, Avinyan said, “According to the preliminary agreement, the Chinese company plans to visit Armenia, and I believe that during this visit, I will also receive the delegation.”
“Overall, the construction of a new copper smelting complex is on our agenda, as what currently exists in Alaverdi is not efficient and is very problematic from an environmental perspective. The discussions happening right now have little connection to what has happened in the past,” he emphasized.
