A New Office to Combat AI Threats Established in the U.S.
The U.S. State Department has officially formed a new division aimed at predicting and countering emerging threats posed by the application of advanced technologies. This initiative particularly addresses countries that, according to Washington, could harness artificial intelligence and other innovative tools as instruments of influence or attack.
Officials report that the newly created Bureau will focus on ensuring national security, including the prevention of cyberattacks, addressing risks arising from the militarization of space, and other similar operations. The core of the Bureau’s activity will revolve around new threats stemming from technological developments.
U.S. authorities have identified several priority areas of concern, including not only Iran but also China, Russia, North Korea, and foreign terrorist organizations. According to them, these actors are actively enhancing their technological capabilities, necessitating a coordinated response.
The State Department informed Congress about the establishment of the new Bureau on the same day the White House released the national framework policy for the field of artificial intelligence.
