The US and Slovakia's Nuclear Block Deal Possible by 2027: Fico
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico hopes that an agreement with the American company Westinghouse for the construction of a new nuclear reactor in Slovakia will be signed in 2027.
On January 14, Fico stated that a potential agreement regarding the new nuclear reactor's construction in Slovakia with Westinghouse is a matter for the following year. On January 17, Slovakia signed a nuclear energy cooperation agreement with the US, which could ultimately allow Westinghouse to build a new power plant on the site of the existing Jaslovské Bohunice nuclear power station.
“We would be pleased if we could reach specific agreements with Westinghouse next year,” Fico said after negotiations with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Bratislava. The joint press conference was broadcasted by the Slovak news agency TASR on Sunday.
Slovakia has two operational nuclear power plants: Bohunice and Mochovce (in the western part of the country), which were built with the involvement of Soviet and Russian specialists.
