Unexpected Early Elections Expected in Turkey, Expert Says
An unexpected possibility of early presidential elections in Turkey cannot be ruled out. However, the current government aims to hold elections at the end of 2027, according to Murat Sabuncu, a columnist and expert at the Turkish T24 newspaper.
The paper reports that the coming years will be challenging due to the country's economic situation and ongoing legal processes surrounding opposition figures. Sabuncu noted that recovering the losses suffered by the economy could take years, while long-term detentions and new trials will continuously strengthen public discussions and pressure on the authorities.
Earlier reports indicated that new proposals regarding a draft of a new constitution would be presented to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. According to the opposition newspaper, the ruling Justice and Development Party does not rule out the possibility of early presidential elections if the new constitution is successfully adopted. In Sabuncu's opinion, the next two years could either maintain the current political situation or pave the way for unexpected developments.
