The Most Powerful Solar Flare of the Last Month
A powerful solar flare, classified as M8.5, has been recorded over the past month, capable of triggering magnetic storms on Earth. This was announced by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAN) on its website.
The flare occurred in an active region directed towards our planet, which increases the likelihood of a direct hit from a plasma ejection. We discuss what is known about this significant event, the potential consequences for Earth, and its relation to recent solar activity.
On June 15, 2025, the Sun experienced a powerful flare that, according to preliminary data, reached the M8.5 level, marking one of the strongest flares in the last 30 days. The epicenter of the activity is located in the active region 4114, which is close to the center of the solar disk, making Earth vulnerable to potential coronal mass ejections (CMEs).
Furthermore, the M8.5 flare recorded on June 15, 2025, has become the strongest of the month and poses a threat to Earth with G2–G4 level magnetic storms. The plasma ejection from region 4114, directed towards our planet, may cause disruptions in technology and provoke auroras on June 17–18. This event highlights the high activity of the 25th solar cycle, which continues to astonish scientists.
