The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has called for the immediate release of Armenian prisoners unlawfully held in Azerbaijan, according to the Armenian embassy in Switzerland.
In his speech delivered on March 3 during the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner Volker Turk highlighted the issues faced by all individuals unlawfully detained in Azerbaijan, including those of Armenian ethnicity. He stated that they should be released without delay and that their rights to a fair trial must be fully upheld.
The High Commissioner also emphasized that he is closely monitoring the peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Turk expressed hope that these talks would lead to the establishment of truth and a reconciliation process, to which he is ready to offer his support.
