Dozens of Azerbaijani Deputies Call on Bayramov
Forty-three Azerbaijani deputies have called on Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov to reassess the country’s cooperation with the United States in a letter addressed to him. Among other issues, they have proposed severing agreements related to defense cooperation and halting the activities of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in the Republic.
“After Azerbaijan restored its sovereignty and resolved the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, the U.S. began taking steps to inflame that conflict. The U.S. has allocated significant financial aid to Armenia, which has led to the rearmament of the country and encouraged it to adopt a non-constructive stance in peace negotiations,” the letter states.
The deputies have called for the termination of the “Joint Statement on Future Military and Defense Relations” signed in 1997, as well as the “Agreement on the Purchase of Equipment and Mutual Maintenance” signed by the defense ministries of Azerbaijan and the U.S. in 2013. The letter also emphasizes the need to cease negotiations on other issues with the American side.
On October 4, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the hostile policy against the Republic from the U.S. does not cease. This comment was made in response to a letter from 60 U.S. congress members addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, calling for sanctions against Azerbaijan due to human rights violations.
