Kaja Kallas Resigns: Reasons Revealed
The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, who was set to take the position of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, submitted her resignation to President Alar Karis on Monday, July 15.
On that day, Kallas' government convened for an extraordinary session during which the Prime Minister and the entire cabinet resigned. Until the new government assumes office, Kallas will continue to fulfill her duties as Prime Minister. She expressed hope that the new government would be formed fairly quickly.
Kaja Kallas has held the position of Prime Minister of Estonia since January 2021. It is worth noting that on June 29, Climate Minister Kristen Michal was nominated as the candidate for Prime Minister due to Kallas’ upcoming role as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, a position she is expected to take over from Josep Borrell.
The new government, under Michal’s leadership, is anticipated to start its work at the end of July or the beginning of August.
