Russia Hopes Iran's President Will Continue Following Raisi's Political Line
Russia is optimistic that Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian will continue the course set by his predecessor, Ebrahim Raisi's administration. This was stated by Russia's ambassador to Iran, Alexey Dedov, in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“In general, we proceed from the fact that the main strategic course of President Raisi’s government will be preserved during Mr. Pezeshkian’s administration as well,” the ambassador said.
Dedov expressed hope that a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement will be signed in the “foreseeable future,” noting that work on it is nearing completion.
“As for other aspects,” he noted, “I believe that relations will develop in accordance with the course set by President Raisi’s government.”
On July 8, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian had a telephone conversation, during which the Russian president congratulated his Iranian counterpart on his electoral victory. According to ISNA, Pezeshkian announced his readiness to sign a comprehensive agreement during the BRICS summit scheduled to take place in Kazan this October.
On July 7, Mohsen Eslami, head of Iran's electoral commission, announced that reformist politician Masoud Pezeshkian won the second round of Iran's snap presidential elections, garnering 16,384,403 votes. His opponent, conservative candidate Said Jalili, received 13,538,179 votes. Eslami noted that a total of 30,573,931 votes were counted, with a voter turnout of 49.8 percent.
