Macron Asks Prime Minister Not to Resign
French President Emmanuel Macron has refused to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, which he submitted following the presidential coalition's defeat against left-wing forces ('New Popular Front') in the second round of parliamentary elections. This is reported by Bild.
Macron has asked the head of government to temporarily stay in his position to help maintain stability after the snap elections. It is expected that the state leader will leave the resolution of this issue until after the Olympic Games, which will take place in Paris. The games will conclude on August 11.
Experts do not rule out that by then, the left-wing 'New Popular Front' may split into several parliamentary factions. A similar event occurred with the previous left-wing NUPES coalition, which was created for the elections in May 2022. Such a scenario would allow Macron to establish a new ruling coalition with a majority in parliament.
Currently, none of the three largest forces (the left, Macron's centrist coalition, and the right) are prepared to form a coalition with one another.
Previously, it was reported that the coalition of left-wing parties, 'New Popular Front', led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, won a victory in the French snap parliamentary elections, securing 182 mandates in the National Assembly. Macron's coalition came in second with 168 mandates, while Marine Le Pen's 'National Rally' will be represented in the lower house of the French Parliament by 143 deputies.
