The Situation Created, Unfortunately, Has Increased Our Anxiety: Erdogan
The results of the European Parliament elections have heightened Turkey's concerns regarding the rise of Islamophobia in Europe. This was stated today by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“We discussed with Mr. Prime Minister (Pedro Sanchez of Spain) the increasing cases of Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe. Unfortunately, the situation created in the European Parliament after the elections has increased our anxiety,” Erdogan said during a joint press conference in Madrid with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
In the European Parliament elections held on Sunday in France, the far-right "National Rally" party (RN) surpassed President Emmanuel Macron's coalition supporters by more than two times, garnering 31.36% of the votes. Following this, Macron announced the dissolution of the National Assembly, the lower house of France's parliament, and the conduct of snap parliamentary elections in two rounds, on June 30 and July 7.
In Germany, the center-right opposition alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU, 30%) achieved a confident victory in the European Parliament elections. The far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD, 15.9%) secured second place, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD, 13.9%) only came in third. As the most populous country in the EU, Germany has the largest number of parliamentary seats with 96.
