Governor of Gegharkunik Region Meets with Protest Participants
Out-of-town workers have blocked the Yerevan-Martuni road, protesting against legislative changes by the State Revenue Committee of Armenia, which mandate that those working abroad must pay income tax in Armenia on earnings received in other countries.
The Governor of Gegharkunik, Karen Sargsyan, arrived to meet with the protesters and emphasized that no one has been taxed so far, although the law has been in effect for a long time. He expressed surprise that no one was aware of this situation and questioned how it was possible that people had not been notified for so many years.
It should be noted that the State Revenue Committee had previously responded to this issue, stating that the regulations regarding tax payments on income received by Armenian resident individuals from foreign countries are not new. Individuals who are residents of Armenia and earn income both in Armenia and abroad are required to calculate and pay income tax at the established rates.
