It Is Known What Issues Will Be Discussed at the Joint Meeting of the Demarcation Committees
The meeting of the respective committees of Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the demarcation and delimitation of the state border will take place at the end of January in a bilateral format. The presence of a third party is not planned.
In response to a written inquiry from Factor.am, the office of Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan announced that the draft regulations on the joint activities of the commissions will be discussed during the meeting.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the agenda for the meeting scheduled for this month would include the demarcation of the Kazakh-Tovuz regions. The media had inquired with the Deputy Prime Minister's office to confirm or deny this information.
They also sought clarification on the absence of confirmed maps and principles for the demarcation process, questioning the basis for the Azerbaijani president’s statement regarding demarcation in that area and whether it is possible for demarcation in Tavush to be conducted similarly to that in Syunik and Gegharkunik, based on GPS.
Furthermore, it was of interest whether Azerbaijan's opposition to demarcation based on specific maps, preferring instead to rely on documentation, is an acceptable approach for the Armenian side.
In response to all these inquiries, the Deputy Prime Minister's office stated that according to preliminary agreements, the draft regulations on the joint activities of the commissions will be discussed first during the next meeting of the demarcation committees.
The draft must define the types and kinds of legally significant documents and legal acts to be used in joint work, identify the last topographic maps from the Soviet era that were properly compiled and published by authorized bodies, and address similar issues.
