VIDEO: Javier Milei Elected New President of Argentina, Promises to Burn Central Bank and End 'Cancer of Inflation'
Extreme right-wing politician Javier Milei, who was not considered the favorite in the second round of Argentina's presidential elections, unexpectedly won by garnering over 56% of the votes. This was reported by the Russian service of the BBC.
His opponent, Economy Minister Sergio Massa, accepted his defeat and wished success to the new leader. “It is obvious that the results were not what we expected. I have spoken with Javier Milei to congratulate him and wish him success, as he is the president that the majority of Argentinians have chosen for the next four years,” Massa said.
Javier Milei advocates for the dollarization of the economy, privatization, and abandoning cooperation with Russia, China, and Brazil in favor of the United States and Israel. The 53-year-old TikTok star, musician, economist, and television presenter, known for his wild hair, has been compared to former U.S. President Donald Trump and former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro due to his flamboyant style and controversial statements.
He has called for “throwing out the sick peso in favor of the U.S. dollar” and promised to burn the Central Bank to put an end to the “cancer of inflation.”
As reported by AFP, Milei has opposed abortion, gun carrying, and promised to sever ties with Argentina’s main trading partners—China and Brazil—and has questioned the number of victims of the military dictatorship. He has denied that climate change is caused by human activity. Milei is also against Argentina joining BRICS.
The politician moderated his rhetoric before the second round to attract more moderate voters, but at the beginning of his campaign, he took the stage with a chainsaw, symbolizing the radical changes he intends to implement in a country facing economic issues.
Reports emerged showing Argentinian residents celebrating Milei's victory in the presidential elections.
