Who Will Be the Next President of the FFA? Names Surface.
The newspaper "Zhoghovurd" reports that sources close to the authorities indicate that the elections for the president of the Football Federation of Armenia scheduled for December may take an unpredictable turn. Of course, it is not entirely appropriate to label this process as an election, as only a candidate backed by power can become the president of the FFA.
Nevertheless, for some time now, dissatisfaction with the current leadership of the FFA has been brewing in the corridors of power. One of the reasons is the deplorable state of Armenian football, the disgraceful defeats of various age teams, and the national team's less-than-stable performances. Against the backdrop of growing public discontent, the current president of the FFA, Armen Melikbekyan, is associated with the authorities. He accompanies them at various events and presents the work done, which has not yielded results and is unlikely to do so.
We have been informed that in the corridors of power, the name of MP Sisak Gabrielyan has been discussed as a candidate for the FFA presidency. There are rumors that the lobbying for this individual has been overseen by the President of the National Assembly, Alen Simonian. Currently, there is no clarity concerning the future of this candidacy. Parallel discussions are also ongoing regarding Mikayel Hayrapetyan, the head of Anna Hakobyan's foundation and the former head of the Diaspora Committee, whose candidacy seems more likely at this moment.
Our sources indicate that while initial discussions saw Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan opposed to the idea of replacing Armen Melikbekyan, he has now instructed to wait and see how the national team concludes their final two qualifying matches for Euro 2024 against the teams of Wales and Croatia. It is clear that the question of the alluring position of FFA president depends on the authorities, and it is also evident that there are quite a few individuals within the ruling team who aspire to occupy this position.
