Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Russia Often Use the Same Rhetoric: Simonyan
After the 2020 war, Azerbaijan has refused to return Armenian prisoners of war and other civilians, contrary to the decision of the European Court of Human Rights. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia, Allen Simonyan, during his speech at the conference of the Presidents of the European Parliament, as reported by the press secretary of the Speaker, Tsovinar Khachatryan.
“Moreover, after the court's decision, Azerbaijan abducted 2 Armenian servicemen from the territory of Armenia, bringing the total number of confirmed prisoners of war to 35,” said Simonyan.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s actions are not limited to Nagorno-Karabakh but extend to Armenia's sovereign territories, part of which remains under Azerbaijani control.
“Dear colleagues, I was not surprised that my Turkish counterpart supported the use of military force against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. I am not surprised that Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Russia often use the same rhetoric. What surprises me is that they do this here in an organization established for the protection of human rights,” he noted.
Simonyan assured that Armenia remains committed to achieving fair and lasting peace in the region.
“We hope that the meeting of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Germany, France, and the EU, which will take place on October 5 in Granada, Spain, will be a step forward. Armenia strongly supports the peace approach agreed upon by Prime Minister Pashinyan and President Aliyev, formulated by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel,” highlighted the Speaker of the National Assembly.
He emphasized that Armenia welcomes future transport agreements that respect the principles of sovereignty, jurisdiction, and reciprocity. Simonyan called on the international community, including the Council of Europe, to support this process.
