VIDEO: How the Flood in Libya Started, Claiming 11,000 Lives with Over 20,000 Missing
Footage of the onset of the floods in Libya has surfaced online. Following the natural disaster that struck on September 10, more than 11,000 people have died, with over 20,000 considered missing.
As reported, the death toll in the coastal city of Derna has reached 11,300, while another 10,100 people are still unaccounted for. Search efforts are ongoing.
In other parts of Libya, the storm 'Daniel' has claimed the lives of 170 individuals. According to the Mayor of Derna, the number of victims could reach between 18,000 and 20,000.
The World Meteorological Organization has stated that thousands of deaths could have been avoided if there had been a functioning warning system in Libya for evacuation purposes. The UN has warned that the next threat to the affected populations is diseases, which could arise from contaminated water.
