During the First Half of This Year, 9,268 Applications for Armenian Citizenship Were Received
Against the backdrop of the Russo-Ukrainian war and the sanctions imposed by European countries on the Russian Federation, the number of applications for Armenian citizenship has increased. This information was reported by Hetq.
The Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that in 2022, a total of 25,515 people applied for Armenian citizenship. In the first half of this year alone, 9,268 applications have been received.
“The lowest number of applications for Armenian citizenship since 2018 were recorded in 2020 and 2021, which can be attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic and the 44-day war unleashed by Azerbaijan in Artsakh. The service also indicated that more than 90% of the citizenship applications were submitted based on Armenian ethnicity. However, the service does not record the applicants' country data, so it is unclear from which country the majority of citizenship requests are coming from,” the media reported.
According to data provided by the Migration and Citizenship Service, from 2018 to the first quarter of 2023, 27,878 applications for termination of citizenship were received, and the citizenship of 27,496 individuals has been revoked by presidential decrees. The service noted that most of the applicants are of Armenian ethnicity.
