Unacceptable: Georgia Responds to Medvedev's Statement
Statements made by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, regarding the potential unification of Abkhazia and South Ossetia with Russia, contradict the principles of Georgia's territorial integrity and are deemed unacceptable. This was stated by Rati Ionatamishvili, Deputy Head of the ruling 'Georgian Dream' faction in the parliament of Georgia.
“Any statement that contradicts Georgia’s territorial integrity is categorically unacceptable. We will peacefully return our people and our territories. This is our main message to our brothers and sisters in Abkhazia and Ossetia,” Ionatamishvili said during a briefing in response to Medvedev.
The Deputy Chairman of the Parliament's Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee, Mikhail Sarjveladze, also described Medvedev's statements as illegitimate. It is noteworthy that earlier, Dmitry Medvedev announced that the idea of unifying South Ossetia and Abkhazia with Russia could be realized. Moscow recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in 2008.
