Situation Improving Regarding the Deployment of Border Guards in the Tegh-Kornidzor Section Says Pashinyan
Work has been carried out to clarify the locations of border guards in the Tegh-Kornidzor area, and the situation has improved to some extent. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan before the start of a government meeting.
Pashinyan noted that with the operation of the new road connecting Kornidzor-Tegh to the Lachin corridor, there will be a change of route towards the Lachin corridor, whereby Armenian border troops will be responsible for the protection of approximately 12 kilometers of the border with Azerbaijan.
“The reason is that until now, direct protection of the mentioned section of the border had not been carried out by either Armenia or Azerbaijan. Consequently, during the assignment of direct border protection, certain issues arose, as reported by the Armenian National Security Service, indicating that during the deployment of both sides, there were misinterpretations of the maps. In certain places, according to the Armenian side, the Azerbaijani side had positioned themselves and had carried out engineering work 100-300 meters into Armenian territory from the border,” said Pashinyan.
He stated that following this, an agreement was reached for the cartographers from both sides to clarify the situation. Specifically, the deployment points have been clarified from 12 to 7 kilometers, while work continues for the remaining 5 kilometers.
Pashinyan added that the Armenian government's disposition continues to prioritize avoiding escalation. He expressed hope that the work to clarify the deployment points will take place in a constructive atmosphere.
Pashinyan concluded by stating that Armenia needs to maintain strong nerves and restraint to avoid giving in to forces interested in destabilizing the regional situation. Despite all the difficulties, Armenia reaffirms its commitment to a peace agenda.
