Lachin Airport to Be Commissioned by End of Next Year or Early 2025, Aliyev
Lachin Airport is expected to be commissioned by the end of next year or early 2025. This was reported by Trend, citing statements from President Aliyev.
“Despite the fact that this region came under our control after the end of the Second Karabakh War, the city of Lachin remained outside our control. There were objective reasons for this. The road from Armenia to Karabakh passed through the center of the city of Lachin. As a result of daytime telephone conversations with the Russian president on November 9, 2020, we managed to agree on the return of the city of Lachin to Azerbaijan. For this purpose, I insisted that the construction of an alternative road be included in the final statement and a deadline be specified. However, it was vaguely mentioned that the discussion of this issue would continue for three years. Nevertheless, as soon as the Second Karabakh War ended, I immediately ordered to determine the route of the new road and all technical parameters.
A new international airport is being built in the Lachin region. There has never been an airport in this region, and we faced significant difficulties in determining the location of the airport. It was impossible to find a flat area to build the runway. We are building an international airport in this mountainous area, surrounded by mountains, cutting through hills, and conducting major earthworks. The airport is expected to be operational by the end of next year or early 2025,” Aliyev stated.
