EU Allocates €27 Million to Support Victims of Armenia-Azerbaijan Conflict, Says Borrell

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell addressed questions regarding the opening of the Lachin Corridor, the EU monitoring mission, and ongoing negotiations raised by Greek MEP Papadakis.

Borrell specifically responded: "The EU has mobilized €3.6 million in 2022 for humanitarian assistance aimed at alleviating the consequences of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict. This amount has been fully allocated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which is the only international humanitarian organization able to operate in the Lachin Corridor.
Since the escalation of the conflict, the EU has provided nearly €27 million in humanitarian aid to support the most vulnerable populations affected by military operations."

Borrell stated: "Since early December 2022, the EU has been closely monitoring the developments along the Lachin Corridor and examining their humanitarian implications. The EU is seriously concerned about the continued restrictions on freedom of movement, which are causing disruptions in the supply of essential goods to the population.
High Representative/Vice President Borrell, supported by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaar, continues to be in close contact with both sides. The EU calls on Azerbaijan to take action within its jurisdiction to ensure freedom and security of movement along the corridor, in accordance with its obligations under the trilateral declaration of November 9."

He also referenced Russia’s responsibilities, stating, "The Russian peacekeeping mission is also responsible for the control and functioning of the corridor."
