EU Plans to Send Up to 100 Observers to Armenia-Azerbaijan Border for Two-Year Mandate

The European Union is planning to send a new mission to the Armenia-Azerbaijan border that will consist of up to 100 observers and receive a two-year mandate. This was reported by the European Politico, citing sources from the EU diplomatic service.

“There was a mutual understanding with Yerevan that there is a need to restore presence, but the previous one was too modest. Now, up to 100 observers will be sent to the region as part of a full-fledged Common Security and Defense Policy mission,” the source told the publication.

According to the source, the project for a two-year mandate mission will be sent for approval to Brussels' Political and Security Committee. In October 2022, EU foreign ministers officially approved the dispatch of 40 observers to Armenia at a meeting held in Luxembourg, aimed at the border with Azerbaijan. This mission was for two months and concluded on December 19.
