Call to Fully Restore Free Movement Through the Lachin Corridor: Statement from the U.S.
The closure of the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia and the outside world, continues to raise concerns for the United States. This was stated by Ned Price, spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, in response to a request for comment on Azerbaijan's actions which have led to severe humanitarian consequences in Artsakh.
“We remain concerned about the disruption of access to the Lachin Corridor and the humanitarian implications of the situation. This hinders the peace process and undermines international trust,” said the State Department spokesperson.
Regarding possible solutions to the situation, Price stated, “We call for the full restoration of free movement through the corridor. The only way to make progress on any issues is through negotiations.”
Azerbaijan has kept the Lachin Corridor closed since December 12, 2022, effectively blocking over 120,000 residents of Artsakh. Due to the road closure, 1,100 people, including 270 children, have been unable to return to Artsakh from Armenia. This has led to violations of the right to free movement, the assurance of basic living standards, access to medical care, education, and other rights. Planned surgeries in healthcare facilities continue to be suspended. On December 19, a citizen in Artsakh died because they could not be transported to Armenia for appropriate medical treatment due to the road closure.
