Greece and Turkey Held Secret Negotiations
In Brussels, a secret meeting took place between Anna Maria Boura, the director of the Greek Prime Minister's diplomatic office, and Ibrahim Kalin, the representative of the Turkish President. This information was reported by RIA Novosti, citing the platform newsbreak.gr.
The publication states that Ibrahim Kalin and Anna Maria Boura spoke in the presence of Jens Pletner, the diplomatic advisor to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It is noted that the meeting was held despite the "rapid increase of tension and threats."
"The negotiations were conducted at the German delegation office in the European Union, with an open agenda and without preconditions, allowing each side to explore the other party's intentions to resume bilateral relations. Jens Pletner, the diplomatic advisor to Olaf Scholz and the former German ambassador to Athens, was present at the meeting," the publication states.
NATO members Greece and Turkey have repeatedly found themselves on the brink of armed conflict due to territorial disputes. Turkey accuses Greece of violating the Lausanne Treaty by deploying weapons to the Aegean islands, which maintain a demilitarized status. Furthermore, the countries have been unable to agree on maritime boundary delimitation issues and resolve several other problems.
It is worth noting that relations between Turkey and Greece sharply deteriorated after August 23. According to reports from Ankara, when Turkish F-16s were conducting NATO missions in the airspace over the Aegean Sea, the fighters had "lost" the radar systems of the Greek Air Force's S-300 stationed on the island of Crete. Turkish authorities announced their intention to raise the issue of Greece's pursuit of their military aircraft at the NATO level.
