Levon Aronian Leads in His Group at FIDE Grand Prix Chess Series
Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian, competing under the flag of the USA, is currently leading in the first tournament of the FIDE Grand Prix series taking place in Berlin. In the second round, the Armenian chess player drew against Russian Daniil Dubov. After two rounds, Aronian tops the tournament table with 1.5 points.
His competitors, Dubov and German grandmaster Vincent Keymer, have each collected 1 point. Indian player Santosh Vidit, whom Aronian defeated in the first round, has 0.5 points.
The tournament in Berlin features sixteen participants divided into four groups. Aronian is placed in Group C, where his opponents include German Vincent Keymer, Indian Santosh Vidit, and Russian Daniil Dubov. The group stage will consist of six rounds, with the winner of each group advancing to the playoffs.
This is the first of three tournaments in the Grand Prix series. The two winners of the series will qualify for the Candidates Tournament.
