100,000 People Left Without Electricity as Thousands of Flights Canceled Due to Heavy Snow in the US
In Massachusetts, 114,000 people have been left without electricity due to a snowstorm raging along the US East Coast, according to data released by the Poweroutage.us portal.
The situation is particularly severe in coastal areas, where flooding has begun due to sharp gusts of wind, leaving around 40 percent of consumers without power. In some regions of the state, more than 30 cm of snow has fallen within a day.
Forecasts indicate that 5 cm of snow will continue to fall each hour throughout the day, accompanied by gusts of wind reaching up to 34 m/s. “Travel will be dangerous or almost impossible in the coming hours,” warned the National Weather Service to Boston residents.
According to meteorologists, heavy snowfall, low temperatures, and sharp wind gusts will persist in the northeastern US until the beginning of next week. In some areas, snow accumulation could exceed 60 cm.
More than 3,500 flights have been canceled, and over 80,000 consumers have lost power due to heavy snowfall in the US on Saturday, monitoring services report. According to the Power internet resource, over 79,000 consumers are without electricity in Massachusetts, and nearly 4,000 in Delaware.
The FlightAware portal reported that 3,520 flights were canceled on Saturday. Authorities in Massachusetts have banned large trucks from traveling on highways and advised residents to avoid going out unless necessary.
