Video: Authorities Attempt to Fight Fake Accounts, But Instead Target Media – Vardevanyan
It is natural for any authority to try to stay away from or limit freedom of speech, but these authorities should distinguish themselves by doing otherwise. This was stated by Aram Vardevanyan, a member of the 'Armenia' parliamentary faction, during the discussion of proposed amendments to the law on media on October 21.
“It is truly absurd for the opposition to come to power and turn into the embodiment of the legal theory of 'Leviathan.' I am confident that media representatives have seen in the last 3 years what kind of attacks have taken place against the media by the authorities themselves, and how intolerant the authorities are towards criticism, which is also reflected in this draft law,” he said.
According to Vardevanyan, the authorities are trying to fight against fake accounts, but not by targeting the fake accounts directly, rather by attacking the media. “This means they don’t say that having anonymous domains is the problem; instead, they claim that linking to anonymous domains is the issue,” said Aram Vardevanyan. He emphasized that the media should have freedom in their activities.
