Murderer, Torturer, You Must Be Imprisoned Forever: Saakashvili's Opponents Demand Indefinite Imprisonment
Opponents of Mikheil Saakashvili are holding a protest near the prison where the former President of Georgia is incarcerated. Hundreds of people have gathered near the Rustavi prison, accusing Saakashvili of the repression that took place during his administration, as reported by Sputnik Georgia.
“Many have had to experience repression and political persecution in Georgia. We are holding this protest to remind the public of what was happening during those years. You will not come out of prison,” said former political prisoner Tristan Tsitelashvili while addressing Saakashvili from the stage.
The crowd is chanting “murderer” and “torturer.” On the stage, where speakers are addressing the participants of the protest, there is a sign that reads “The Executioner in Prison.” Protesters are demanding that Saakashvili be imprisoned indefinitely.
“You must be imprisoned forever,” said Iya Metreveli, the mother of Buta Robakidze, a young man who was shot during a police special operation in 2004. His death had widespread repercussions, and five Ministry of Internal Affairs officials were convicted of abuse of power 14 years later.
Saakashvili is in Rustavi prison, serving time for two criminal cases. Immediately after his arrest in Tbilisi, he declared a hunger strike, which has now entered its 16th day.
