Dink's Family to Receive 1.5 Million Lira Compensation
The family of former "Agos" editor Hrant Dink will receive a compensation of 1.5 million lira. The information was reported by Ermenihaber.am.
It has been announced that the Turkish State Council (Danıştay - the highest administrative court) has upheld the decision of Istanbul's 6th Administrative Court, which approved the claim for compensation by Hrant Dink's wife, Rakel Dink, and their children, Sera, Delal, and Arat Dink, in the amount of 1.5 million lira.
The State Council rejected the Ministry of Interior's appeal and accepted the family's assertion that the Ministry had been negligent in their duties and had objective responsibility in the murder of family patriarch Hrant Dink, an Armenian journalist from Istanbul.
It is worth noting that Dink's family had filed a lawsuit against Turkey's Ministry of Interior at the Istanbul 6th Administrative Court, claiming that the Ministry had shown a lapse in duty in the case of Hrant Dink's murder. They sought 1.5 million Turkish lira in compensation, including 500 thousand for material damages and 1 million for moral damages. The court unanimously granted the claim, but the Ministry of Interior appealed the court's decision.
Hrant Dink was murdered on January 19, 2007, by 17-year-old nationalist Ogun Samast at the doorstep of his editorial office in Istanbul. Samast was arrested by the police the day after the crime and was sentenced to 22 years and 10 months in prison by the court in 2011.
Dink's murder sparked significant public outcry in Turkey. His funeral turned into a massive demonstration, attended by representatives from various countries and international organizations.
