Iran's Foreign Minister Anticipates Russia's Response to Possible Border Changes in the Caucasus
Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, upon arriving in Moscow, announced that he plans to discuss the situation in the Caucasus during his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The remarks from the Iranian diplomat were cited by the IRNA agency on Tuesday.
“During the meeting with Lavrov, we will discuss our positions regarding the events taking place in the Caucasus,” he stated, adding, “We expect that Russia will respond to possible changes in borders in the region.”
Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Moscow comes amid a series of critical statements exchanged between Azerbaijan and Iran and follows the commencement of military exercises by Iranian armed forces near the Azerbaijani border. Tehran is conducting exercises within Azerbaijan's territory in the presence of Israeli forces. Baku, in turn, has expressed its concerns regarding the exercises and has stated that “Iranian trucks are illegally entering Nagorno-Karabakh.”
The negotiations between Lavrov and Amir-Abdollahian are scheduled for October 6. They are expected to address the nuclear deal, as well as other pressing topics on the regional agenda, including the situation in the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, the Persian Gulf, Yemen, and Lebanon.
