ECHR Issues Ruling in the Case of Sasun Mikayelyan
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has published its ruling regarding the lawsuit filed by the President of the Yerevan City Council, Sasun Mikayelyan, against the Republic of Armenia on August 31, 2021. This was reported by 1lurer.am.
Mikayelyan submitted his application against the Republic of Armenia, number 1879/10, to the court on December 25, 2009, under Article 34 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
The decision will notify the Armenian government of the complaints related to the allowance of testimony presented against him as evidence during the pre-trial phase, the impossibility of interrogating witnesses against him, the inability to summon witnesses on his behalf, as well as the alleged interference with his rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and the alleged discrimination based on his political opinions.
The case relates to Mikayelyan's conviction for participating in the protest movement following the disputed presidential elections of February 19, 2008. The lawsuit was initiated in accordance with paragraph 1 and 3 of Article 6, and Articles 10, 11, and 14 of the Convention.
The ECHR ruled that the respondent must pay Sasun Mikayelyan €9,000 in moral damages within three months, as well as €3,800 for his incurred expenses.
