Two French Tourists Climb Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro
Brazilian authorities have arrested two French nationals who climbed to the highest point of the Christ the Redeemer statue without permission. According to O Globo newspaper, citing the police, the 28-year-old French citizens were found inside the statue after it was closed and had ascended early in the morning on August 23.
The individuals used stairways located within the statue, which are utilized for maintenance work, allowing them to reach the hands and head of the monument. A security guard noticed the trespassers, leading to their arrest; however, they were released on bail of 10,000 reais (approximately $1,918).
Reportedly, the police confiscated all photographs and videos taken from the statue. The construction of the monument was completed in 1931, and its height, including the pedestal, is 38 meters, as reported by RIA Novosti.
