It Was Very Important That Not a Drop of Blood Was Shed: Vahe Ghazaryan
The responsibility of the Armenian police is to maintain public order and prevent internal confrontations and clashes, regardless of who the Prime Minister is. This was stated by Police Chief Vahe Ghazaryan in an interview with iravaban.net.
He recalled that when the current authorities were in opposition, the police performed the same functions as they do today. In this regard, the identity of the Prime Minister is not significant.
Recently, especially in Yerevan, there has been a noticeable presence of police forces, for example, during the Prime Minister's movements. Ghazaryan noted that there have been explosive situations in the past months, particularly last December in Yerablur.
“Stones and firecrackers were thrown. If something had happened, if a drop of blood had been shed, we would have been disgraced around the world. Everyone should behave appropriately within their limits,” said the Police Chief.
Since November 10, about 600-700 people from the police have been engaged daily in internal political processes, with actions, protests, and marches taking place. According to Ghazaryan, it was very important that no extreme steps were taken and no blood was shed.
Regarding reforms in the police system, particularly the reconstruction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ghazaryan mentioned that the initiative has both positive and negative aspects. Personally, he is against hasty decisions.
According to the Police Chief, no one in the system has been dismissed because of their political views. There are supporters of both the authorities and the opposition working there.
“I’ve told them that we do not interfere in politics, we step back from Facebook, and we work,” Ghazaryan stressed. He believes that social networks played a negative role during the war.
