Severe Hailstorm in Shoghakat Community Leads to Livestock Losses and Crop Damage
A severe hailstorm that struck yesterday has devastated the orchards and crops in the village, killing 10 sheep. Suliko Shushanyan, the head of the Shoghakat community in Gegharkunik Province, informed NEWS.am about the incident today, June 19.
“In the second half of the day, a strong hailstorm began. The hail was the size of hazelnuts and lasted about half an hour to 40 minutes. I have lived in this village for 30 years, and I have never seen anything like this; it was the first time. It destroyed the entire harvest and the crops as well. The main crops were barley and wheat, and the trees were mostly apricot, pear, apple, and cherry trees. The cherries had just turned red, and everything was damaged,” the community leader explained.
“In the field, 10 sheep died. We went to look for them and gathered them one by one,” he added.
