A Book About the Armenian Genocide Featured in The New York Times' Weekly Recommendations

The esteemed publication The New York Times has included the book "THE GIMMICKS" by Chris McCormick in its list of 11 recommended reads for this week. The events in the book unfold in Armenia and also reference the Armenian Genocide.

According to Armenpress, the newspaper's annotation notes that McCormick's novel begins approximately 60 years after the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, detailing events that take place in the early 1970s in Kirovakan. The story follows two cousins in Soviet Armenia who share a bond similar to that of brothers.

One of them, Ruben Petrosyan, a promising backgammon player, is interested in politics, while the other, Avo Grigoryan, an attractive young man, gradually becomes a professional wrestler in the United States.

Chris McCormick is originally from California, but his mother settled in the United States from Armenia. He is currently an associate professor at the University of Minnesota.
